Sarah Burke Dies at 29 After Training Accident in Utah
Sarah Burke, a pioneering Canadian freestyle skier and four-time X Games champion, died on January 19, 2012, in Salt Lake City. She was 29 years old.
Burke passed away from severe injuries sustained during a training run on January 10 at Park City Mountain Resort. According to reports, she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery following a fall in the superpipe. The injury led to cardiac arrest and, ultimately, irreversible brain damage.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in women’s freestyle skiing, Burke was instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of women’s ski halfpipe in the Winter Olympics. Her efforts contributed significantly to the event’s debut at the 2014 Sochi Games.
