Jon Spiris, the longtime owner of the iconic Mt. Pleasant eatery Jon’s Country Burger, has passed away at the age of 70. Spiris died on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2026, at Woodland Hospice House following a brief illness, surrounded by family and close friends.
His passing comes just weeks after the beloved local restaurant closed its doors, marking the end of an era for the Mt. Pleasant community. Located on Mission Street at Bellows, near the campus of Central Michigan University, Jon’s Country Burger had been a staple for generations of residents and students.
Born March 20, 1955, in Mount Pleasant, Jon was the son of John and Betty (Cornell) Spiris. A 1973 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, he dedicated much of his life to the family business. His father founded Jon’s Drive-In in 1957 after gaining inspiration from drive-in restaurants in California, naming it after his son. Jon officially took over the restaurant in 1977 and worked there for more than 50 years, serving everything from gyros and BBQ sandwiches to donut sundaes and fish dinners.
Known for his warm personality, tireless work ethic, and exceptional customer service, Jon had a gift for connecting with everyone who walked through the doors. Beyond the restaurant, he cherished time with his wife, Kathy (Onstott) Spiris, whom he married on Sept. 9, 1977, and their children and grandchildren. He especially loved spending time with his granddaughters and playing his electric guitar.
Jon is survived by his wife Kathy; son Michael (Beth) Spiris; daughter Stephanie (Dustin) Woodbury; his grandchildren; siblings; extended family; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow. A luncheon will take place at Reflections Reception Center. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m., and again Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to HATS or Woodland Hospice House.
Jon Spiris leaves behind a lasting legacy in Mt. Pleasant — not just as a restaurateur, but as a friend, neighbor, and community fixture whose impact will be remembered for years to come.
